Public payphones are convenient, but there are some drawbacks. Try to find ones that cost only 25 cents rather than 50 cents. You can buy phonecards in many delis and in ethnic neighborhoods (e.g. Chinatown, Jackson Heights) allowing national and international calls for cheap. But beware! Read the fine print on the card very carefully, because some cards carry enormous per-call or weekly surcharges. Nevertheless, you usually can find a great card offering hundreds of minutes to Europe , India or China for just $5.

Bringing your cellphone from home? If home is Europe or Asia, you'll probably pay enormous charges to receive calls via your home number. But what if you buy a prepaid SIM card here? You will save quite a bit receiving phone calls with your new U.S. phone number. But the real road warrior who hasn't got the cash to burn through for wireless finds a phone and emails friends to call at that number. Or perhaps you're already using a super-cheap VOIP calling card, such as Ekit, formerly known as EKNO?
